Dark Horse actor Toby Meredith
Is that the Box Office sign behind you?
Yes that’s right, it's where you get tickets for Dark Horse shows when they are here at the Lawrence Batley and across the way is the rehearsal room and through there to the left is the theatre. I’m sitting in front of a bush, it’s very comfortable but if I lean back I’ll crush it, that’s why I’m sitting up straight!
Lasagne or stir fry?
Both are delicious. I’d aim for the stir fry as it’s healthier and its better to eat light for the work at Dark Horse. Heavy food isn’t good when you’re doing things like Yoga and movement rehearsals.
And are you doing those things at the moment?
Yes. Always. This summer in the Actor’s Studio the focus is on solo performance and I play the Reverend Avery in a scene which is all set in a pulpit. He’s a Vicar and he has important things to say but he has bad case of indigestion which he’s trying to hide. This is his obstacle. We’re thinking at the moment about how much he should burp.
It can make the audience react but you don’t want to do that too much or you don’t tell the story properly so it’s a balance really. It has to be real. Believable. It’s not clowning. Making it real is what the silent approach is all about. So the audience believes it. That’s who we’re doing it for, after all.
What do you do for fun?
I play in a band called The Wild Geese, I play the bodhran which is an Irish drum and we tour sometimes to places like Ireland. I also love watching rugby and I’m a Bradford Bulls supporter. I go to the gymn when I can.

What’s your favourite television programme?
I love comedy and really enjoy Mrs.Brown’s Boys. I watched a lot of cowboy movies a while ago for SNAKEBITE- John Wayne’s good. I played Mayor Curly Logan and rode a horse. It was a dark drama- audiences loved it.
What are your ambitions as an actor?
I really want to do national touring. I’m 32 now and I’ve been an actor here for over 4 years and I feel like I’m ready for the challenge. The company lost a lot of funding but I know people are working really hard to get it together to do a show called I LOVE YOU BABY. We planned to do this before the money got cut and I was going to play a part in it. Fingers crossed this happens. That's what I’d like. To travel across the UK and maybe even abroad playing a character that’s been written for me in a new play.
Why are you waiting in the courtyard?
I’ve just arrived from Pocklington, which is where I live. It’s a long train journey into work each day and I get up at about 5AM but I love it. In a few minutes the whole ensemble will go up to the rehearsal room and start the warm up for the day ahead. So I’d best go now. See you later.
